The richest man on the planet, Jeff Bezos, has made one of the biggest charitable donations in recent history after he committed a $10 Billion fund to fight climate change. The philanthropic effort was announced by Bezos on Instagram, which he called the Earth Fund, and it will help scientists and activists fight the biggest environmental crises of our time.
“Climate change is the biggest threat to our planet. I want to work alongside others both to amplify known ways and to explore new ways of fighting the devastating impact of climate change on this planet we all share. This global initiative will fund scientists, activists, NGOs — any effort that offers a real possibility to help preserve and protect the natural world. We can save Earth. It’s going to take collective action from big companies, small companies, nation states, global organisations, and individuals. Bezos wrote in the post on Instgram.
The Amazon founder suffered years of criticism which highlighted that he was not doing enough to help fight poverty and support charitable causes with all of his immense wealth. That however, is now all about to change with the announcement of Earth Fund and no better time as the climate is at a tipping point and in dire need. According to Yahoo news, an Amazon spokesperson confirmed that Bezos will be using his own finances to fund the donation. The donation will also amount to about 10% of Amazon founders total net worth. “Amazon took a bold step when it announced the Climate Pledge, committing the company to meet the goals of the Paris Agreement ten years early, and we’re incredibly excited about the Bezos Earth Fund,” an Amazon spokesperson told Forbes. “Jeff’s passion and this extraordinary personal contribution to the fight against climate change are going to have a huge impact.”
